What Makes the Irish, Irish?

What are the three most important traits of being Irish? Well according to a survey conducted by short break specialist SuperBreak among Irish people they are:

* Having a great sense of humour

*Putting family first

*Knowing the Irish traditions

However, despite almost one in five (18 per cent) championing the importance of knowing about Irish heritage, the survey of 1,000 people nationwide proved that not everyone can call to mind famous Irish folklore. One in ten (11 per cent) didn’t know that according to Irish legend, Leprechauns are said to bring you luck. Over a third (39 per cent) couldn’t identify what is said to happen if you are to kiss a Blarney Stone, with over a quarter of those in Dublin (27 per cent) and Ulster (27 per cent) believing it gives you good luck in love rather than the gift of the gab, though, of course, one could lead to the other!
Perhaps surprisingly, the younger generation see more importance in knowing Irish traditions than those older than them, with one in five 18 – 24 year olds saying that it was the most important trait of being Irish, compared to only 16 per cent of those aged 45 and above.

Releasing the findings after a St. Patrick’s Day survey, SuperBreak is helping those inspired to celebrate all things Ireland and brush up on their knowledge by taking a trip closer to home.
