And the Academy Award goes to…

Our predictions for tonight’s 88th Academy Awards.

BEST PICTURE
The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
Brooklyn
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight

Prediction: Last year Alejandro González Iñárritu took home two Oscars for Birdman and it’s our guess he’s going to repeat his success tonight with The Revenant. That said we have a feeling Spotlight could be the dark horse at this year’s ceremony.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

Bryan Cranston, Trumbo
Matt Damon, The Martian
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl

Prediction: It HAS to be Leo! This is the sixth time the actor has been nominated and it’s all starting to get a bit awkward. One of the finest actors of his generation, for his role as Hugh Glass he endured extreme conditions, had an awkward encounter with a bear and ate raw bison liver. C’mon Hollywood, put us all put of our misery.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Cate Blanchett, Carol
Brie Larson, Room
Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years
Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn

Prediction: Brie Lawson is the favourite after her performance in the brilliant Room. Superbly understated, Lawson’s performance as Ma in the adaptation of Emma Donoghue best-selling novel shows the heartbreaking power of motherly love.
